An officer at 1:20 p.m. Jan. 21 responded to the Dillard’s department store parking lot to help a shopper locate his lost car.

After the officer found the vehicle in the parking lot, he began heading toward the store to find the owner. At that time, the officer spotted a suspicious man leaving Dillard’s with a large garbage bag slung over his right shoulder. The bag appeared to be full of items.

The officer followed the trash bag-toting suspect to a waiting vehicle with two more men inside.

The officer used his cruiser to block their car. He then looked in the garbage bag and found $492.41 worth of store merchandise.

The officer arrested the man who carried the bag out of the store for petty theft. The other two men were not charged. However, neither of the two had a driver’s license, so their car was towed from the lot.

Petty theft: Great Northern Mall

The growing size of a woman’s purse helped tip off Dillard’s store security to a suspected shoplifter.

A North Olmsted police officer at 4:19 p.m. Jan. 25 responded to Dillard’s after store security reported taking a suspected female shoplifter into custody.

A loss prevention officer said he witnessed the woman repeatedly take clothing into fitting rooms, then leave the fitting rooms carrying fewer items of clothing. At the same time, the woman’s purse was “visibly larger than before,” according to a police report.

Store security and police discovered that the purse contained more than $171 in clothing, including three Armani shirts and a hoodie.

The woman was charged with petty theft.

Stolen vehicle recovered: Clague Road

At 1:04 a.m. Jan. 26, police learned from an automated license plate reader that a stolen vehicle had entered their city. Officers located and stopped the Ford Escape on Clague Road north of Interstate 480.

They learned that the vehicle had been reported as stolen at gunpoint in Cleveland.

The woman driving the Escape told officers that she had permission from a woman named Kate, whose full name she did not know, to use the vehicle.

Cleveland police officers responded to the scene and took the suspect into custody. Cleveland police were expected to file charges against the woman.

North Olmsted police did not expect to file charges of their own, according to a police report.

Officers at 4:44 p.m. Jan. 26 responded to Play it Again Sports, a sporting goods store, regarding an intoxicated man lying on the ground and yelling on his cell phone.

Officers arrived and found that the man had wandered to the back of the building, where he was holding an open glass bottle, flailing his arms and yelling words that did not make sense.

The nearly empty bottle had contained grape spirits with 40 percent alcohol by volume, according to a police report.

Police charged the man with disorderly conduct while intoxicated and held him until he was sober.
